Commonly known as Diabetes, Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disease or a condition in which the blood glucose levels from a person’s body go beyond normal levels.
It can be of 3 types
- Type 1 diabetes
- Type 2 diabetes (insulin resistance)
- Gestational diabetes
Insulin, a peptide hormone plays the most important role in diabetes. Insulin is a hormone, produced by the body itself that determines and controls the amount of sugar in the blood by signaling the liver, muscle, and fat cells to take in glucose from the blood.
In type 1 diabetes the patient’s body stops making insulin completely. In type 2 diabetes the patient’s body does not generate enough insulin or does not consume the body’s natural insulin, well. Gestational diabetes is a condition that occurs in pregnant women and diminishes (in most cases) after childbirth. But there are high chances and possibilities of developing type 2 diabetes in the future or later stage if she had experienced gestational diabetes before.
Diabetes is one of the conditions that need immediate, and proper medical care and can lead to serious problems if left unattended such as:
- Eye problem
- Nervous damage
- Heart disease
- Kidney failure
- Urinary problem
- Dental problem
- Cystic Fibrosis-related Diabetes
- Monogenic Diabetes
