Hypogonadism is a condition in which your sex glands, also known as gonads, produce little or no sex hormones. The sex glands in men are known as testes and in women known as the ovaries. Sex hormones play a very important role in menstruation (women) and sperm production (men). They also help in controlling the secondary sex characteristics, such as:
Women
- Breast development
- Pubic hair growth
- Widened hips
Men
- Testicular development
- Pubic hair growth
- Facial hair growth
- Primary Hypogonadism
- Central/ Secondary Hypogonadism
Primary hypogonadism
Primary hypogonadism is a condition where one doesn’t have enough sex hormones in their body due to issues with their sexual glands. While the sexual gland is still receiving the command to produce sex hormones from the brain, the issue with the gland makes things difficult and prevents the gland from producing them.
Central/ Secondary Hypogonadism
Unlike primary hypogonadism, the problem here lies in one’s brain. This condition can come when the hypothalamus and pituitary gland; the gland that is responsible for the regulation of your sex glands, fail to work properly.
